Basic Concepts & Principals of Slydini’s System of Misdirection

This lecture is centered upon the techniques Slydini created and employed in his Close Up Magic. The primary goal of the lecture is to have the student realize Slydini’s basic principals are available to him without surrendering his own personality. Slydini’s Misdirection is based upon what we have in common, how we move, think, express ourselves, be it via word, physical expression, tone of voice, body language, and eye contact/eye expression. Examples of the physical and physiological principals will be demonstrated from the routines for which they were created. This is a fundamentals lecture, individual routines will not be taught in detail. This lecture is recommended for the groups that want a basic appreciation of Slydini’s thinking and/or the group that intends to continue on with the lecture series with a fundamental understanding of the principals prior to any additional study.

For more information about these concepts please see the introduction to: The Master of Misdirection on D’s Manuscript page.

The Coins Through The Table

Version One: Six Coins and the English Penny

Version Two: Six Coins and the Ring

Version Three: Six Coins

This lecture is centered upon the techniques Slydini created and employed in his Coins Through The Table Routine. The lecture is limited to the first three variations. The first two variations employ Slydini’s method for the Hand Ping Chen movement, therefore the by learning Variation One the student is also learning Variation Two. The variations: Six Coins and the Ring and Three Coins offer the student insight into how Slydini employed reinforcement psychology in his presentation to amplify audience response. The Six Coins variation offers a lesson on how Slydini employed sound to create the illusion of the presence of coins in his hands as well as an introduction and employment of the principal: The Body Takes The Hand. The lecture also takes into account the psychological misdirection which is absolutely necessary and creates justification for the magician’s actions in the mind of the spectator.

The lecture is limited to these variations because they are not dependent upon employing classic Slydini Timing Patterns.  (Note: Slydini Timing Patterns are based upon a 72 Beat per minute movement and involve the concepts of: The Body Takes The Hand, Coordination, and Performing A Necessary When The Audience Is Mentally At Rest. It is the misunderstanding of these concepts that have contributed to the belief that one has to become Slydini to employ his concepts successfully.)

The Cigarette Magic of Slydini

This features the techniques Slydini employed to perform his: Torn & Restored Cigarette (both lit cigarette and unlit cigarette versions), Encore Cigarettes, The Cigarette Fantasy, The Appearing Matches, and The Vanishing Match. Slydini’s Cigarette Magic offers the student the opportunity to employ his timing patterns but in such a limited context that the temptation to become Slydini can be avoided. The Cigarette Fantasy is the ultimate conclusion of Slydini’s System of Movement and is offered as a lesson in how principals do not exist in isolation.

For more information about Slydini’s Cigarette Magic see the introduction to: The Cigarette Magic of Slydini on D’s Manuscript page.
